Today, the American Academy of Pediatrics journal, Pediatrics in Review, published its foundational peer-reviewed article on caring for children of incarcerated parents. The authors share practical tips, extensive resources, and positive strategies with pediatric providers. Table 1 (page 635) highlights the KidsMates C.A.R.E.S. approach for developing resilience in the face of parental incarceration, and Table 2 (pages 637-639) provides a list of support resources by geography. Thank you Pediatrics in Review for supporting children affected by this silent American epidemic!

When caregivers provide their child with dependable and reliable information about his or her parent’s incarceration, they lay the foundation for developing resilience. The disclosure fosters a trusting relationship between the caregiver and child, creating a comfortable environment for the child to ask difficult questions while grieving his or her loss and adjusting to a new reality.
